AWB – Air Waybill

The AWB module is intended for the preparation of an air waybill.
An air waybill is a contract of carriage between the consignor and the air carrier for the transportation of goods. It also serves as a proof that a consignment has been delivered, as a receipt for transport costs, as a guidance document for the proper handling of the goods, etc… In some countries an air waybill is also recognised as a customs document – as a customs report or even as a customs declaration.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) sets standards and recommendations for the transport of cargo on international air services. These standards which, inter alia, determine the form and content of an air waybill, are published in the form of resolutions (IATA Resolutions and IATA Recommended Practise) and are mandatory for all IATA members.

Air waybills can be used:

  • or individual shipments – the transport of goods from one consignor to one consignee
  • for consolidated shipments; for the whole shipment a Master Air Waybill (MAWB) of the carrier is issued, and for individual shipments within a groupage a House Air Waybill (HAWB). In this case, the HAWB is a contract of carriage between a consignor and an agent, and the MAWB a contract between an agent and an air carrier
